WELCOME to the 2008 Wild West Rally

 Worker/Volunteer Registration.

What kind of work might I be asked to do?

Road Marshal
A Road Marshal is assigned a junction where a side road joins the rally stage and is responsible for making sure that no unauthorized people or vehicles enter the stage at that junction. This is one of the most important positions for ensuring safe operation of the rally, while, at the same time, it is also one of the easiest positions for a novice rally volunteer to perform.

Time Control Marshal
A Time Control Marshal is assigned a position at the start or finish of each stage and notes the time that the rally competitor arrives at their position in a log and on the time card that the competitors carry with them. The competitors must pass through these stage time controls, as well as when entering or exiting the service area and at the beginning and end of each leg of the rally. There are additional specific tasks associated with the type of the time control that the marshal is assigned to. While it is ideal for an experienced rally volunteer to work these positions, the tasks that need to be performed are simple enough that a novice rally volunteer should be able to pick them up quickly.

Spectator Area Marshal
A Spectator Area Marshal is assigned one of the spectator areas along the rally stages and is responsible for making sure that the spectators viewing the rally there do not put themselves in harm's way. Instruction will be provided concerning what constitutes safe and unsafe rally spectating. Similar to the Road Marshal, these positions are important for keeping people safe, while, at the same time, being relatively easy for a novice rally volunteer to perform.

Specialized Positions
There are a number of positions that require specific training, licensing or experience. Among these are Ham Radio Operators, Emergency Medical Technician, Vehicle Extraction and Recovery and Technical Scrutineer.

Please note your area(s) of interest on the Worker/Volunteer registration form.

PLEASE HAVE ALL VOLUNTEERS REGISTER ON-LINE AT http://www.pacificrallygroup.com/   "Olympus Worker Reg"  Tab

To all Olympus Volunteers,

The organizers and the volunteers from Pacific Rally Group (PRG) thank you for registering as a worker at the historic Olympus Rally.  Due to some road use issues we moved the event from the traditional forest roads of Western Washington to the gravel and dirt county roads of Garfield County and placed the rally functions in the county seat, Pomeroy.  The move was made at the last possible minute.  The folks in Pomeroy had already formed a committee to make plans for the Wild West Rally in September. They have done an outstanding job of doing everything possible to make the Olympus Rally a success. The PRG members have made numerous trips from their western Washington homes to Pomeroy. The course that Clerk of the Course, Ron Barker, has designed should be fun and challenging for the Rally participants. Most of the PRG members are making the trip across the state to work on the event.  The local folks in Pomeroy and Garfield County are providing a number of volunteers, and we want to thank each and every one of them for participating. The Palouse Economic Development Council, the Pomeroy Chamber of Commerce and the Port of Garfield County have all been a great help. They are providing the Saturday evening dinner at the conclusion of day one. The Up & Up Bar and Grill are providing free food Friday evening to all of the rallyists and workers. The Up & Up is also providing a great buffet breakfast on Saturday morning for the low cost of $5.50. The Garfield County Fair Board is providing the Garfield County Fairgrounds for the rally activities and service. They also are serving a Sunday morning breakfast at the fairgrounds for $5.00.

The folks who live in Pomeroy and Garfield County are the most gracious hosts I have worked with in the 35 years I have been organizing events. Alesia Ruchert from the Palouse Economic Development Council has donated many hours of her time to help us in any way she can.  That is why the Sunday event, named for her, is her small reward for a job well done. The other members of the Pomeroy/ Garfield County rally committee are listed in the supplemental regulations. They have all donated their time to help make the rally and your visit successful and fun. When you are in town please take the time to visit the business' on Main Street to hunt for a special treasure or just to say "Thank You'.

We ask that you stop by the Up & Up's Friday Welcome Party when your schedule allows, that you plan for breakfast at the Up & Up on Saturday and the fairgrounds on Sunday. We ask that you stop by the Saturday evening dinner that the Palouse ECD, the Pomeroy Chamber and the Port of Garfield are providing at no cost. The dinner is also an 18th birthday party for Miquel Cranor, one of our long time volunteers and Jr. Rally Group organizer.  We encourage everyone to come and celebrate.

Pomeroy and Garfield County

If this is your first visit to Pomeroy and Garfield County you are in for a treat. The area is like most towns were fifty or one hundred years ago. Most folks do not lock their doors or take the keys out of the car at night. If you have a question or want to find someplace or someone everyone will give you the answer or tell you who can give you the answer. The main industry is farming. They will be planting while we are there. Please do not drive onto any of the freshly tilled fields. They will have just been planted or are ready to be planted. The farmers have our schedule and should not be on the transit roads when you are. If there is a problem and you have phone service (Garfield County is called a no radio area so you may not) call your service folks so we know what is happening and where it is happening.

The Olympus Rally will be one of the largest economic impacts this area has ever experienced. We ask that you make every effort to make the impact large and a good experience. We want to continue using the area for the Wild West Rally and we want to find the WELCOME MAT out. Have fun, and be safe.

Thank you,

The 2008 Olympus Rally Organizing Committee
